Week 1 Historical Influences on Darwin:

1). Alfred Russel Wallace who was born in 1823 and 14 years younger than Darwin.

Independently reached the same conclusion about natural selection.

2)  In 1858 Wallace wrote a letter to Darwin writing in detail his ideas about evolution.  Darwin was surprised that someone else had the same ideas as he.  Wallace was not famous like Darwin was.  Wallace inspired Darwin to publish his book a lot earlier than anticipated.  It would be 10 years later that  Wallace would publish his book.  Wallace's believed he was the father of biogeography
( the study of how species are distributed) of how plants and animals would come to be about and end up living in certain places.  However, Wallace did not make it big to due Darwin’s previous publish book.  https://youtu.be/WJpZLwMIgk4

3). " Wallace believed that natural selection could not explain human intelligence on its own, arguing that some sort of higher power must be involved".  Darwin did not agree.   Wallace ran into money issues and Darwin helped him get a government pension in recognition of his scientific contributions. Although Wallace never became famous.   https://youtu.be/WJpZLwMIgk4

4) Yes, Darwin was already in the process of establishing his own idea of natural selection.  However Wallace's influence led Darwin to publish his ideas before Wallace had the chance to.

5). Darwin at the time was very hesitant about stating his theory due to the fact that he did not want his family nor friends to perceive him as a  hypocritical man who went against his family's beliefs.

  1. I suggest that you stay away from YouTube sources for your paper. Stick with scientific sources.

Okay on your background of Wallace. Wallace essentially came up with the same mechanism for evolution as Darwin did. He developed this during his voyage in the Spice Islands and began a communication with Darwin, sending him specimens and bouncing ideas off of him. Eventually, it became clear to Darwin that Wallace and he were both developing the same mechanism, which finally drove Darwin to publish his work after more than a 20 year delay. He and Wallace jointly published a paper laying out their theory and then Darwin published his book "Origin of Species" which is probably why we remember Darwin when think of natural selection and not Wallace.

The third section asked you to review the bullet points in the guidelines and figure out which (if any) can be attributed to Wallace. The issue of human intelligence was not one of those points, so I'm not sure what you are referring to here. If Wallace and Darwin developed the same mechanism, wouldn't it be correct to state that all of the bullet points applied to Wallace as well?

Good on the next section. I agree that Darwin did indeed already create his mechanism and the Wallace's primary contribution was helping Darwin finally decide to publish.

Was Darwin just concerned about how his family would perceive him? Was he at all concerned with how his work might negatively impact his family and their place in society?

  2. Hi A. Lozano,

I also found do Alfred Russel Wallace as the same to you.

As an English is not my main langugage, I appreciate your youtube link which give me more information and can connect all sort of information together.

I agree that Wallace also push Darwin to publish his ideas before Wallace had the chance to.
